Equality and Diversity
Torpoint Nursery and Infant School is firmly committed to Equality and Diversity. This is reflected in our mission statement:
“Where each child is special and every child matters”.
The Equality Act 2010 requires us to publish information that demonstrates that we have due regard for the need to:
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
- Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
We strive to ensure our school is an inclusive and accepting environment where difference, of all kinds, is recognised and valued. We will ensure that every pupil irrespective of race, disability, gender, religion and belief or sexual orientation is able to achieve high standards and that strategies are in place to tackle under–achievement. We have a statutory obligation to promote the integration and valuing of all groups of people as well as actively responding to incidents of discrimination and prejudice wherever they may appear.
We promote pupils’ understanding of the protected characteristics. These protected characteristics are: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex, sexual orientation. As a Nursery and Infant School, the age appropriate teaching linked to the above is reflected in our PSHRE curriculum where children learn to respect commonalities and differences between each other and their families, within school or the wider world. A central goal of our school is to promote in each child an understanding and acceptance of diversity, alongside a strong sense of belonging within the wider community and the country in which they live.
We also respect the equal rights of our staff, other members of the school community and visitors to our school. Our intention is to ensure that the adults working or volunteering in our school include where possible a gender mix, appropriate representation of diverse ethnic groups and disabled people. We believe that this will provide good role models for pupils from all backgrounds and puts into practice our understanding that we recognise the unique position of schools to promote acceptance and understanding within the wider community.

Putting our Principles into practice
As an inclusive, respectful community, we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all at Torpoint Nursery and Infant School.
We demonstrate this in the following ways:
1. We are committed to ensuring that no learners are disadvantaged.
We regularly analyse the progress and attainment of all learners, including those who share a protected characteristic. Where we identify variations between pupils who share a protected characteristic and the overall School population, we will investigate the cause and where necessary, take steps to address this.
2. Our curriculum is accessible to all learners. We accommodate the individual needs of all our pupils, making changes where required and tailoring support to ensure pupils achieve their best potential.
3. We uphold the British values of respect and tolerance, and we consider it our duty to nurture and develop this understanding.
4. We promote an inclusive culture in which all children feel comfortable sharing concerns with adults so that they can be appropriately supported. We also ensure that all parents feel able to approach the school with concerns or difficulties.
5. The school celebrates world festivals and marks notable events during the calendar year. This raises awareness of moments in the year that are important for our community across a wide range of protected characteristic groups.
6. Relevant equal opportunity implications are taken into account when drafting and reviewing School Policies. Key policies are kept up to date on our website and are available on request from the School Office.
