Computing

At Torpoint Nursery and Infant School we view computing as an integral part of teaching and learning and acknowledge the significant role it plays in the education of all children in our school.

Computing underpins todays modern lifestyle and it is essential that all children gain the confidence and ability that they need in this subject to become long life learners.

As a school, we use Purple Mash Computing Scheme of Work to inform our comprehensive Programme of Study.  This scheme supports our teachers in delivering engaging lessons which help to raise standards and allow all children to achieve their full potential.

Teaching and learning

Our computing curriculum ensures that children have a broad experience of computing in a range of contexts, including outdoor play. Our learning environments feature computing scenarios based on experience in the real world, such as in role play areas. We provide a wide range of technologies including interactive white boards, programmable robots, Ipads, digital and video cameras; all of which are used to enhance teaching and learning throughout the curriculum.

In EYFS children are provided with rich opportunities for them to explore and engage with technology for example pressing different buttons on everyday objects and using a range of toys including coding toys such as Codeapillar. They also use some Purple Mash units to support thier learning in the wider curriculum, for example, in Expressive Arts and Design.

In Key Stage One, we continue to build on children’s knowledge and understanding of computing. Children are given a range of opportunities to explore and use computing equipment. We follow our computing Programme of Study, informed by Purple Mash, to ensure that all children are making progress from their individual starting points. Throughout the school, computing   plays an important part in all areas of learning and is integrated into everyday life.

Computing skills are taught, where appropriate, in our learning themes and these skills are practised through integration into all areas of learning. We encourage the children to explore different ways in which they can use computing, for example, improving their gymnastics in PE by recording and watching back their routines as part of their evaluation.

Assessment

Progress is tracked through the school’s comprehensive assessment documents which have specific end points that the children are assessed against, in the form of ‘I can’ statements. These’ I can’ statements link directly to what has been taught in the Programme of Study.

Extra-Curricular opportunities (clubs)

In Key Stage One, children have the opportunity to partake in a STEM After School Club. One. As part of this club, children develop thier love for the subject and are provided with a range of opportunities to develop their computing skills.

When children leave us at the end of Year Two , they will:

  •  be confident users of technology, able to use it to accomplish a wide variety of aspirational goals, both at home and in school.
  • be able to apply the British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty when using digital systems.
  • have a secure and comprehensive knowledge of the implications of technology and digital systems. This is important in a society where technologies and trends are rapidly evolving.

Online Safety

We live in a world where technology is key in every area of our lives. It is vital to teach our children how to use technology safely and therefore interwoven into all aspects of Computing is online safety. Children are taught how to keep safe and the steps to take if any worries or problems arise.

You can find out about how we ensure, and help children learn about, online safety on our Online Safety page
